READ: Mark 16:1-20 THINK: Since we have full access to God’s written Word, we may sometimes find it difficult to relate to the emotions and experiences of people we read about in the Bible. After all, it’s always easier in retrospect to over- dramatize situations, to excessively glorify people’s faith, and to criticize their failures. But certainly we would have emerged with different perspectives had we actually been there and lived through events described in the Bible. RESPOND: What do the women’s actions during Jesus’ ministry (cf. vv. 40-41) and surrounding His death tell us about their character and commitment to Him? (See 16:1 note.) How would you have felt if you were with the women during these events? Why did Jesus’ followers refuse to believe the reports that He was alive (vv. 11-13), even though He had told them He would rise from the dead (cf. ch. 10:34; 16:7)? Are the signs Jesus spoke about (vv. 17-19) still valid today? Why or why not? (See 16:18 note.) What signs do you think accompanied the disciples’ preaching (v. 20)? Who was behind these works? What signs should we expect among Christ’s followers today? Are these signs evident? Why or why not? (See article on Signs of Believers, p. 1377.) PRAY: Ask God to help you become better acquainted with His Word and to remember and apply what you study. Ask Him to help you follow the example of the women who stuck by Jesus through the darkest hours. Ask Jesus to work through you in powerful ways to confirm the message He has called you to spread. ACT: Follow the example of the women who served Jesus’ needs and the example of Jesus, who meets your needs. Look for people who have apparent needs—physically, emotionally, relationally, spiritually. Pray for these individuals as you encounter them throughout they day, asking God to do miracles, even for those who don’t know Him yet. Serve everyone you can in practical or tangible ways. Perhaps this will spark spiritual conversa- tions. Believe that God will do things so powerful that people will not be able to explain them apart from Him.

READ: Mark 15:21-47 THINK: Why did Jesus endure all the rejection and pain He encountered during His life and ministry—particularly as His death approached? He certainly didn’t deserve the abuse, and He didn’t pursue this path of opposition for His own sake, other than the fact that He wanted to relate to us in a personal way. But that was not possible without God’s intervention. He could not have a relationship with people who have all chosen to go their own way and defy Him. That’s what sin is, and it separates us all from God. Ultimately, our sin warrants death and eternal separation from Him. The only way to restore that relationship was for God himself to provide the perfect payment for sin’s penalty, which He did by sending His Son, Jesus, to suffer sin’s ultimate consequences in our place. Jesus died to provide forgiveness and new life for those who entrust themselves to Him. That’s the message of hope His followers have the privilege of sharing with everyone else, even those who continue to reject Him. RESPOND: Why would people heap insult upon injury as they passed by Jesus? For whom did Jesus suffer and endure all of the shame, and why? Do you think that those who mocked Jesus would have believed Him if He would have saved himself from death? Why of why not? Why did Jesus not save himself (cf. v. 31)? Whom did He save instead through His death? What was the symbolism and significance of the temple curtain being torn in two from top to bottom (See Matthew 27:51.) What does this mean for you? PRAY: Express gratitude to Jesus for enduring the shame of your sin against God, and for opening the way for you to be forgiven and have a personal relationship with God. ACT: Whenever you hear someone make a negative, derogatory or insulting comment about God, Christianity, faith, spiritual issues—even if they use God’s name casually as a curse word—take a moment to pray silently for the individual. Ask God to reveal himself in an undeniable way to him or her. If you feel that it’s appropriate, say something that may influence the person to rethink their words or opinions. But be kind and gracious as you do.

READ: Mark 15:1-20 THINK: Have you ever noticed how fickle people can be—how quickly their moods, opinions and behaviors can be swayed depending on the situation or how others respond to them? Have you also noticed how people will do things when they are with a group or in a crowd—things they would never do, or even consider, on their own? Call it peer pressure, a group dynamic, a herd mentality—call it whatever you want—but it’s a sad reality that unrestrained crowds tend to throw aside inhibitions and bring out the worst in people. And when a few lose control, others often follow, all for the sake of two extremes—getting attention or trying to blend in. Christ’s followers, however, must dare to be different, resisting the inclination to imitate destructive behaviors. Instead, they must lead by example and seek to influence others for good. RESPOND: Why do you think the crowd—some of whom had likely witnessed Jesus’ ministry and even celebrated Him before—was so easily persuaded to ask for Barabbas’ release and for Jesus’ crucifixion (vv.9-14)? Why did Pilate eventually hand Jesus over to be crucified (v. 15)? How are we sometimes like Pilate? Why do you think the soldiers were abusive to Jesus, when they likely had little or no previous interaction with Him? How do you think you would have handled yourself as a soldier in that situation? Would you have joined in the ridicule? Why or why not? Why do people so easily engage in destructive behavior when they are with a group or crowd? PRAY: Ask God for boldness and strength of character to avoid destructive situations and to resist pressure from people to behave shamefully. Ask for wisdom in choosing the friends and groups with whom to keep company. ACT: When you are with a friend or in groups today, make a conscious effort to resist negative pressure to say or do anything that might displease God or hinder your witness for Him. Instead, be a leader and try to influence your groups for good, helping to bring out the best in those around you.
